Why Hear Your Heart?
I was 11 when I had my first attack. I couldn’t control the right side of my body or speak. I was rushed to the hospital. At first, all the doctors thought I was having a stroke.
Growing up I spent much of my childhood in and out of some of the best doctors' offices in the country trying to discover what was wrong with me. I was diagnosed with Ménière's Disease in June 2017, Meningitis in 2018, and Lyme Disease in February 2021. These diagnoses’ have resulted in stroke-like seizures, fatigue, autoimmune issues, vertigo, and my most brutal battle- progressive hearing loss. I believe our purpose is to connect with others. I found out at the age of 18 I was losing my hearing and the possibility of going deaf entered my mind. This made me feel like I was losing my connection with people and living inside a glass box by myself. I lived in fear for 7 years knowing there would come a day I could no longer hear my friends laugh, the piano keys I play, and the voices of the people I love most. My heart broke thinking of this. My doctor introduced the idea of a cochlear implant as I am now mostly deaf in my left ear. I was given the opportunity to meet wonderful people who have received them. I was blown at how this device and surgery was giving the deaf the ability to hear and also giving people back their ability to connect with so many others. I am dedicated to helping this cause because I know first-hand how cochlear implants impact lives. I know how important hearing is as mine has slowly been taken away. Hear Your Heart is an organization devoted to enriching the lives of people by giving the gift of hearing and inspiring others along the way. We believe in a world where everyone can have the option to hear and be heard. We believe in connection. This organization was built to encompass what it means to truly Hear Your Heart.
